It’s no secret that Minnesota has seen its share of blustery weather over the years. And why wouldn’t it? The Midwestern state borders Canada and Lake Superior, bringing in plenty of lake effect snow to last a lifetime. It’s that time of year when some of us want to bundle up by the fire and watch the snow fall. But for the adventurers of the North Star State, the snow brings a whole new level of excitement. When the winter months hit, it’s time to whip out the ice fishing pole, seek out a winter festival, or board a cruise including dinner for two and a trip along the Mississippi River.

Minnesota winters can seem long, but there are some incredible events happening that can make the winter months seem shorter. For ideas to move you out of the house and into the joys of snowy days, here is a list of 5 Minnesota winter events to get you through the season.

1) The Super Bowl
If you’re not busy on February 4th, 2018, the National Football League has a golden ticket for you. Super Bowl LII will be played on that Sunday at the new
U.S. Bank Stadium. This groundbreaking move puts Minnesota in the spotlight, further showcasing the snowy state as a destination to behold. Dubbed the “Bold North,” this Super Bowl event is sure to bring in football fans from all over the country.

2) Visit a Winter Festival
Winter isn’t just about snow. At the
Saint Paul Winter Carnival, people from all over the state have the opportunity to involve themselves in events like snow sculpting, fishing contests, a Broomball tournament, and sampling enough food to keep visitors full and warm all day. Most events are free and open to the public. If you’re looking for new lands to explore between January 25th and February 10th of the new year, this winter festival is waiting for you.

3) Run With the Dogs
If you’ve never been dog sledding, you’re in for a real treat. Hopping
on board a sled with a handful of well-trained pups is the perfect way to explore the wilderness in northeast Minnesota. You can plan a day trip or a multi-day trip. If you can handle a pack of dogs running you through the woods at 18 mph, this winter adventure is for you. Grab your friends and family and schedule a weekend of dog-gone fun.

4) Laugh Until You Cry
Maybe playing in the snow isn’t for you. If this is the case, grab some friends, pull your boots on, and head off to the
Brave New Workshop Theatre. For over 50 years, this theatre has brought original comedy to the Twin Cities. If you feel like the winter blues are creeping up on you, let your snow lovers head off into the great white north while you cozy it up with smiles and laughter at the theatre.

5) Paradise Charter Cruise
Have you ever been on the Mississippi River? Lake Minnetonka? Outside of your own front door?  Yes, yes, we know this isn’t a WINTER activity, but it doesn’t mean that you can look forward to it! Taking a well-deserved cruise is a great way to enjoy spring and summer in a whole new way. For less than the cost of dinner for two, you and your favorite person can hop on board a
Paradise Charter Cruise for an afternoon of sightseeing. If one friend isn’t enough, reserve a narrated cruise for a group. With dinner packages as an option, and food and beverages available on board day cruises, a Paradise Charter Cruise is the perfect event to look forward to all winter long.

Lastly, if you ski, snowboard, or snowshoe, there are plenty of places to take to the hills. And let’s not forget ice skating. They don’t just call Minnesota the Land of Lakes for nothing!
