There’s something magical about the fall season in Minnesota: crisp air, golden sunlight, and sweeping landscapes painted in fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. If you’re dreaming of a leaf‑peeping adventure, here’s a guide to some of the best spots across the state, ranging from metro escapes to “up north” wonders.
When & How to Chase Fall Colors in Minnesota
Before we get to the destinations, here are a few tips to plan your trip:
- Peak timing shifts by region. In 2025, fall color typically peaks from late September through mid‑October, beginning in northern Minnesota and gradually moving south and east.
- Use the Minnesota DNR Fall Color Finder (our favorite!!) to track where leaves are “starting,” “near peak,” or “past peak.” MN DNR+1
- Aim for clear, crisp mornings or late afternoon light.
- Expect the prime color window in any given area to last about a week, though weather (wind, rain, frost) can shorten the show.
Top Spots Across Minnesota for Fall Colors
1. Lake Minnetonka or the Mississippi River (West Metro / Twin Cities)
Often overlooked in leaf‑peeping guides, Lake Minnetonka and the Mississippi River offer a stunning location to see fall colors close to home. One of the best ways to experience it is via a Sightseeing or Dining Cruise aboard Paradise Charter Cruises and The Minneapolis Queen. The 1.5 to 2‑hour cruises depart from The Port of Excelsior (Lake Minnetonka) or Bohemian Flats (Mississippi River) and run through early to mid‑October, giving passengers a waterborne perspective of lakeside woods and reflections of autumn hues.
2. North Shore / Lake Superior Corridor
If you can make the trek north, the North Shore of Lake Superior is a classic for a reason:
- State parks like Tettegouche, Gooseberry Falls, and Split Rock Lighthouse showcase forests meeting rugged cliffs and vast lake vistas.
- The Scenic North Shore drive (Highway 61) is especially rewarding, with pullouts, waterfalls, and overlooks framing colorful forests against the deep blue of Lake Superior.
3. Great River Road & Mississippi River Bluffs
The winding roads and rivers along the Mississippi River through southeast Minnesota (Red Wing, Winona, etc.) deliver sweeping bluff views framed by hardwood forests.
- The Minneapolis Queen: Cruise down the river as you view the glowing fall colors from the water!
- Frontenac State Park is a highlight, with trails and overlooks above Lake Pepin.
4. Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (Chaska / Chanhassen area)
For something closer to the metro with a curated twist, the Arboretum is a gem. Spanning over 1,200 acres of gardens, natural forests, and meadows, it offers an accessible and varied leaf‑peeping experience.
5. Fort Snelling State Park / Mississippi River Valleys (Twin Cities Area)
If you’re looking to stay close but still absorb vibrant foliage, Fort Snelling State Park and river valley trails around Minneapolis–St. Paul is an excellent bet.
Trails along Crosby Farm Regional Park (St. Paul side of the Mississippi) combine wooded bluffs and riverfront paths.
- The Chain of Lakes / Grand Rounds route is another metro favorite for fall drives or bike loops.
- Ride on The Minneapolis Queen as we cruise along the river to see sights and beautiful fall colors.
6. Itasca State Park / Northern Minnesota Forests
For a real escape into color, head to northern Minnesota forests:
- Itasca State Park — the headwaters of the Mississippi — surrounded by mixed woodlands that shine with fall brilliance.
- Chippewa National Forest / Scenic State Park area — quieter but rich in color and forest solitude.
- Savanna Portage, Jay Cooke, Gooseberry Falls, and other state parks up north are frequently cited among top fall destinations.
